The public art grant was commissioned by the city of Poughkeepsie, which has a whaling dock from which ships sailed worldwide to hunt whales, mainly for the oil.
Herman Melville's "Moby Dick", was written in the northeast, while he resided on a farm near Pittsfield, MA. The concrete whale was built in my Cragsmoor studio. The tiles and 5 sections were delivered and installed in Waryas Park during the summer of 2003.
The concrete whale's teeth were designed and sculpted by local youth and the ceramic tiles were made by approximately 600 community residents. Literature and history provided stories for tile making, as did the tragic events in 2001.
